This change will affect all sponsors who create user profiles or assigns and manages positions in the old Care Identity Service application.
If you are a Sponsor who creates new user profiles or assigns and manages positions, from 1 May 2024 you must use Apply for Care ID to create new user profiles. You will need to use Care Identity Management to assign and manage positions.
This change will also affect Registration Authority Agents, who will soon be able to assign positions in Care Identity Management without the need for Sponsor approval. This functionality will be available to Registration Authority Agents before 1 May 2024.

The process for creating new user profiles and assigning and managing positions for Sponsors is changing from 1 May 2024. From that date you must use Apply for Care ID to create all new user profiles.
If you are a Sponsor who assigns and manages positions in your organisation, you will need to start using Care Identity Management.
The Sponsor approval process for position assignments in Care Identity Management will also change. Before 1 May 2024 Registration Authority Agents will be able to directly assign positions without Sponsor approval in Care Identity Management.
We encourage all colleagues to use the Care Identity Management service before 1 May 2024, in order to confirm you can access the service.

The old Care Identity Service application is being switched off, and users are being moved to the new CIM service.
We have been dual-running both services for more than a year, and will be switching off features gradually until we can retire the old service completely. By moving user groups over in stages, we can reduce the risk of unexpected issues causing disruption to the service.
The creation of new users via Apply for Care ID and assignment and management of positions in Care Identity Management has been available for more than two years. Sponsors have been able to use Care Identity Management to assign and manage positions since December 2023.
